Engineering

From my earliest recollection I was a tinkerer. I was fascinated with machines and kept a notebook on my bedstand for "inventions". This is a brief synopsis of my work history from my start in manufacturing to machine design to startup product development.

Manufacturing Management

My career began in a leadership role at Jeld-Wen. The worlds largest manufacturer of windows and doors.  I was responsible for the day-to-day management of 30-40 hourly(Non-English speaking) employees.

From the design and fabrication of new machinery, to educating staff on Lean principles, and day-to-day employee management, I've been in the trenches and know what it takes to make an operation successful.

ACQUIRED SKILLS

  • Employee Management/Safety
  • Job training
  • HR
  • SOP's
  • Lean/6-Sigma
  • Spanish

Research & Development

Swagelok sells the highest quality valves and fittings in the world. Their products are designed to operate in the most challenging conditions and never fail.

In the division of New Product Development(NPD), I was responsible for testing of products, creating statistical analysis of results, modeling design modifications in Solidworks, and developing new experiments(DOE) for design alterations.

ACQUIRED SKILLS

  • Component/Product Testing: Helium Leak, Cycle Rig, Thermal Chamber, Torque, etc.
  • Design of Experiments(DOE)
  • Post-Mortem Analysis
  • Statistical Analysis
  • Solidworks

Startup Engineering

John Moore and Bat. Chief Steve Nash had life-saving concept, and they needed an engineer to help them design it.

Imagine a large warehouse engulfed in flames. Smoke so thick you can hardly see your hand in front of your face. The floor gives way beneath you and you're 12ft. below grade. How do you get out?

Modern technology is working on ways to find a downed first-responder, but without line-of-sight or Firehose to follow, you're on your own. Enter the Fireground Compass - a novel and simple way of orienting yourself in a situation where time and oxygen are not your friend.

The product was designed of heat resistant plastic with large bezels that could be operated with gloves on. It lights up in the dark, and provids a beacon of hope for those who find themselves with no other option.

ACQUIRED SKILLS

  • Injection Molded Design
  • Non-Ferrous Printed Circuit Board(PCB) Design
  • Department of Homeland Security - Tech Solutions Testing
  • High Heat and Water resistant.

Fabrication

While starting DRIFT, I was hired as a Design Engineer/Fabricator for UVPS. I was responsible for not only managing and fabricating existing product(high power UV curing systems and power supplies), but for designing new concepts as well.

The machine on the right began as a sketch with parameters. This prototype(FloorCure) took approximately three months working exclusively in my spare time. This and a high power LED system for fiberoptic curing were later patented and sold.

ACQUIRED SKILLS

  • High-Voltage Power Supply Design & Fabrication
  • Electrical Diagram Design
  • Extrusion Design
  • BOM Management
  • Conveyor Fabrication
  • Welding
  • Milling
  • Press Brake
  • Jig and Fixture Design
  • Process Documentation

Process Development

Over the course of two years I developed a high-end optical frame manufacturing process. I had never set foot in an eyewear facility and had no prior knowledge of acetate production. DRIFT called on every bit of my engineering experience from college through professional, and within two years DRIFT had become the first boutique eyewear factory in the US in 50 years.
